History of Bocce Ball
Bocce came to the United States in the early 1900s. Italian immigrants from the region close to Liguria brought the game with them.
At that time, it was a game exclusively for the men. Women and children were barred from playing mostly because the guys wanted to get some male bonding time in.
They could drink, smoke, cuss, and even gamble - things that weren't proper - without the ladies there.
Over time, it opened up and become popular. It's not hard to see why - it's easy, social, and fun.
Now that you know the history, find out how to play the game.
What You Need to Play Bocce Ball
To begin playing, you need to get a bocce set and a place to hold the match. Here's what you'll need:
- A bocce court. Official measurements are 76 feet long by 10 feet wide.
- Eight large bocce balls. They should be in different colors and patterns.
- One smaller target ball, called a pallina
- Tape measure - not necessary, but good for close calls
As you can see, you don't need much to get started. Speaking of getting started, read on to see how to to begin playing.
How To Begin A Game
Split into two teams. You'll have to do a coin toss to determines who goes first when starting out.
Whoever wings the coin toss gets to pitch the pallina.
On the bocce court, you'll have a zone that the pallina has to land. It can be a circle drawn at the end of the court.
Once the pallina is in position, your goal is to get your bocce ball as close as possible to it.
How To Play Bocce Ball
The same team that pitched the pallina gets to bowl the first bocce. Your best bet is to get the ball to stop right in front of the pallina.
The next team then gets a chance to bowl. They might even knock the other team's bocce ball out of the way.
After each round, you'll tally the score. If your ball touches the pallina, that's two points. If your ball is closer to the pallina than the other team's, you get one point. If both balls are equal distance apart, there's no points awarded.
